Protection of vehicle electronics

Modern vehicle electronics are increasingly threatened by tampering and hacking attacks. More and more vehicle manufacturers, therefore, protect access to the diagnostic data of their new vehicle models. As a result, car repair shops no longer have full access to vehicle electronics. Instead, where available, they must first obtain access again via the respective manufacturer-specific gateways and payment concepts.

SDA for independent repair shops

Many vehicle manufacturers have different access requirements and payment concepts for accessing their vehicle data. As a consequence, the access process can be particularly challenging for independent car repair shops. To counteract this issue, Bosch has developed Secure Diagnostic Access (SDA), a central, integrated and standardized solution, which allows easy access to protected vehicle electronics. Diagnosis can thus be carried out in full, just like before, with the usual functions of ESI[tronic] Evolution.

SDA enables central access to the various participating manufacturer solutions by using the SingleKey ID (former BoschID). This consists of an e-mail address of the repair shop employee and a password. Registration for the personal SingleKey ID is free of charge and only required once. What's more, the ID can not only be used for SDA, but also for other Bosch applications, both professionally and privately, e.g., for booking technical training courses at Bosch Service Training Centers or for smart home applications.

Advantages of SDA in ESI[tronic] Evolution

Simple solution

Secure Diagnostic Access from Bosch pools the various individual solutions of the participating vehicle manufacturers.

Cost savings

Instead of separate diagnostic devices and licenses for each manufacturer, only the SingleKey ID and a one-time online user identification is required.

Time savings

After initial registration of the SingleKey ID, no further registration is required for the respective manufacturer portals.

Competitive advantage

The time and cost savings of the new function ensure that multi-make car repair shops stay efficient and competitive.

Thanks to SDA in ESI[tronic] Evolution and a Bosch KTS 560, KTS 590, KTS 350 or KTS 250* diagnostic tester, working on vehicles with protected vehicle electronics remains possible without any restrictions.

Individual solutions of the vehicle manufacturers

For vehicles of the Renault Group (Renault, Dacia) protected by a security gateway, registration on the ASOS website is required.

At present, ESI[tronic] single licenses (OTP licenses), test licenses or licenses for educational establishments are not available for SDA and in some countries.

Bosch keeps in constant contact with the vehicle manufacturers. The ESI[tronic] Evolution diagnostic software is continuously updated and enhanced with new features, such as working on protected diagnostic access with SDA.

To be able to use Secure Diagnostic Access, repair shop employees must register once to receive their personal SingleKey ID free of charge. Using their SingleKey ID, consisting of e-mail address and individually selected password, employees can then access protected diagnostic data via SDA. The personal SingleKey ID enables use of the diagnostic data on all makes that can be accessed via SDA.

To access protected data of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, one more process step is required on top of the SingleKey ID. After logging in with the personal SingleKey ID, users are offered an online user identification process, similar to the one required for opening an online bank account. This is only required once in order to access the protected Mercedes-Benz data. The user is guided through the process step-by-step.
